After months of speculation and hot on the heels of StreamCo’s announcement of its SVOD service Stan, Netflix Inc. has confirmed that it will launch in Australia and New Zealand in March 2015. The much anticipated service is now only months away.
Netflix has almost become the default word in Australia for ‘SVOD’ services and the question is at launch will it be able to live up to all the hype and shake up the SVOD market in Australia. The key to Netflix’s success and for that matter any SVOD service launching in a new market is access to content that viewers are willing to pay for in order to watch.
Speaking of content, Netflix at launch in Australia and New Zealand will have rights to original series such as Marco Polo, BoJack Horseman and DreamWorks Animation?s’ All Hail King Julien. Netflix has confirmed that content will be delivered in HD and 4k (where available).
Netflix AU/NZ will also be home to the critically acclaimed documentaries Virunga and Mission Blue, and stand-up comedy specials Uganda Be Kidding Me, Live, from Chelsea Handler and Jim Jefferies’ BARE, among many others. For more on Netflix’s content for Australian/New Zealand subscribers read the press release here.
Netflix will be available on smart TVs, tablets and smartphones, computers and a range of Internet-capable game consoles and set-top boxes.
Pricing details for Australian/NZ will be announced in due course.
