Cliffhanger election sends media into overdrive

The Australian election may have been run but it has not yet been won. A situation not seen since the Second World War has left the Australian political environment in a state of limbo until a minority government can be formed and approved by the Governor-General.

This result played into the hands of the media last night as broadcasters and publishers went into overdrive in trying to accurately predict the result. The Seven, Nine and Ten Networks Coverage of the election lasted until around 12am, whilst Sky News Australia knocked off at 12:30am and newcomer ABC News 24 wrapped up live coverage at 1am. News of the election was also picked up online by all major outlets in Australia and on international news sites such as BBCNews.com, CNN.com, NBCNews.com and election related topics were tracking globally on Twitter during the evening. The cliffhanger election also featured on CNN International’s rolling news coverage and could be heard on BBC World Service News at 1:00am AEST.

Whilst the TV ratings results for the coverage will not be known until Monday morning and online ratings not immediately available, it was nonetheless non-stop coverage on nearly every media outlet last night.

FrostGlobal.com will provide ongoing analysis of the media coverage for Election 2010 as more information comes to hand. In the meantime please enjoy this picture montage of coverage from TV and Online media outlets.
